Twitter Lite 3.1.1 is a lightweight Android app from Twitter, Inc for reading and posting on Twitter, the network now called X. It was designed for slow mobile networks and phones with little storage, and people still look for a Twitter Lite download when the full app feels too heavy for an older device.
Twitter Lite started as a way to bring the service to markets where mobile data is expensive, connections are slow and many phones have limited memory. Instead of a large native app, it wraps the mobile web version of Twitter in a very small package, so the install takes a fraction of the space of the main app. The timeline, replies, likes, reposts, direct messages, search and notifications work in a similar way to the full client, but images and videos are handled economically: a data saver mode shows previews and loads full media only when you tap. Pages are cached, so reopening the app on a weak signal still shows recent posts. The trade-off is that new features of X usually reach the main app first, and some tools for creators, advanced media editing and subscription features may be missing or appear later. Build 3.1.1 is the version listed on this page; the service itself has changed a lot since the rebranding to X, so check what is currently offered for your region before relying on the Lite app.
Twitter Lite runs on Android phones, including older and budget models. The package is extremely small, about 241.05 KB according to catalogue data, because most of the content loads from the web. A working internet connection is needed, even if it is slow.
Sign in only through the official app or website. Turn on two-factor authentication in the account's security settings and review which third-party apps have access to your account. Be cautious with links in direct messages: phishing pages imitating the X login are widespread.
The app is free. X offers paid subscriptions with extra features, but reading and posting do not require them.
The full X (Twitter) app covers every feature of the service. Other light social apps on our site include Facebook Lite and Instagram Lite, and Threads offers a similar text-based feed from Meta.
